A child with mental retardation undergoes a comprehensive evaluation to
determine the nature of services required. Evaluation is done for three purposes:
diagnostic, instructional & progress monitoring. After evaluation, collected data
is translated into statements of special education needs. Both criterionreferenced (or teacher made tests) and standardized tools are used for this
purpose. Maintaining detailed assessment and programming records of each
child with mental retardation manually is a time consuming and cumbersome
task. Analysis of the records of each child is highly complex. The special teachers
are required to dedicate a good amount of their time for this purpose.
Media Lab Asia in collaboration with C-DAC, Trivandrum has developed
“Punarjjani” - a software tool to aid teachers in progress assessment and
evaluation of the children with mental retardation. In other words, “Punarjjani”
is a web based integrated evaluation tool for the mentally retarded children.
Teachers can do qualitative and quantitative measurement of progress. The tool
is capable of generating & aggregating graphs and charts on the progress of each
child. Analysis of the reports generated is very useful for the teachers as well as
parents & guardians.
Pramila Devi Special School for the Challenged has applied this software
tool in our system for the mental retarded children. This tool has been hosted by
Media Lab Asia and can be accessed at - ‘www.punarjjani.in’. Two nos. of
Special Educators from our school have been trained through Internet by Media
Lab Asia at C-DAC premises, Kolkata. They have entered the data of our mental
retarded children in this software as per their developed format.

Agriculture is the backbone of our economy. Unless we develop our
agriculture, it is difficult to develop the living standards of community. The
economy of Jajpur district in general and Binjharpur block in particular is
mainly agrarian in nature. Agriculture is the major source of livelihood for
community in Binjharpur block. The inhabitants of this block are mostly small &
marginal farmers having small & medium size land holdings. Binjharpur block
consists of 29 Gram Panchayats (GPs). Out of these GPs, 18 GPs are irrigated.
The rest GPs are non-irrigated. Rice is traditionally grown in two well defined
seasons, namely kharif and dalua. Of these two, kharif (rainy) is the most
important rice season. The kharif rice (paddy) is a major crop, covering over 85%
of the total rice area. It is sown in June and harvested in October-December,
depending upon the duration of the cultivation and topography of field.
The dalua (summer) crop coincides with the dry season and depends
entirely on irrigation. The source of irrigation water is tank. The dalua season
stretches from December-January to April-May. Farmers grow only high-yielding
varieties during this season. Apart from the rice, the farmers cultivate other
crops like black gram, green gram, groundnut & varieties of vegetables
throughout the year. In this way, the farmers get good harvest. Some of the
farmers also undertake cultivation as share croppers.
The organization is promoting the scope of agriculture in different villages of
Binjharpur block and has formed 5 nos. of Farmers’ Clubs there. Farmers’ club
are such types of club where farmers get organized around exploring & sharing
water resources, securing inputs and marketing of their production. The
members of club also learn general knowledge & skills within nutrition, health,
water & sanitation, education and community development. They always
maintain sustainable agriculture practices. The aim of farmers’ club is to provide
the famers with such knowledge & organization that they can respond to the
needs of their families & communities today, increase their income and become
integrated in the market economy.
The Govt. of India as well as Odisha are taking utmost steps to change the
living standards of women and making them self-sustained. To achieve this goal,
SAP has formed & strengthened 17 nos. of village level women Self-Help Groups
(SHGs) in Binjharpur & Dasarathpur blocks of Jajpur district for promoting
saving & credit activity among women to make them self-sustained. A SHG is an
informal association to enhance the member’s financial security as primary focus
and other common interest of members such as area development, awareness,
motivation, leadership, training and associating in other social inter-mediation
programmes for the benefit of the entire community.
Apart from that, the SHGs are organizing themselves to create massive
awareness about various social issues like gender inequality, casteism, dowry,
anti-liquor movement, violence against women, girl child education, child labour,
illiteracy, women & child trafficking, protection of sound environment etc. Some
of the SHGs have received loan from local Banks and are running Income
Generating Activities like Rice processing, Diary farm, Goatry farm, Dry fish
business. The Field Coordinators & Volunteers of the organization arrange
regular meetings of women members and discuss about their performance
through maintaining of SHG records & its management.
Cultural Meets of different villages are arranged every year for the sake of
promotion of culture. Drama competition was arranged at Binjharpur block this
year where people from different villages performed 4 nos. of Dramas which
covered different issues of social, cultural & religious importance and promoted
the impact & importance of universal brotherhood, harmony & cultural cohesion.
The best declared Drama was awarded prize by the local Sarpanch.
The Special School also organizes various recreational programmes like
song, dance & sports among its mentally retarded & cerebral palsy children for
their all-round development. The concerned teachers are responsible to conduct
such type of activity as per their monthly plan.
The intellectual disabled children of our Special School had also
participated in song & dance competition at District level function on the
occasion of “World Disabled Day” on 3rd December, 2017 and received awards &
certificates from the Collector of Jajpur District Mr. Ranjan Kumar Das, IAS &
other Government Officials like Sub-Collector, PD-DRDA, DPC-SSA, DSSO,

Running of Creche unit for disadvantaged children has been one of the prudent efforts of the organization to mobilize people for constructive efforts and develop their creative attitude to help & promote coherence in family and community life through proper care of children and help ensuring enabling environment for ailing mother & working women who are unable to take care of their children regularly. Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Programme is a major step towards fulfilling this objective. The Creche workers are mainly responsible to take care of such type of children. There are 6 nos. of Creche Centres at present in 6 GPs of Binjharpur block run by the organization that takes care of 0-6 years children of ailing & working mothers. There are 25 nos. of children in a Creche centre. The organization has accommodated 81 boys & 73 girls in these centres during this period where they are provided supplementary nutrition, recreation facility & safe accommodation during entire staying period.
